A Comprehensive Clinical Approach to Vestibular Rehabilitation

A Comprehensive Clinical Approach to Vestibular Rehabilitation

According to the Vestibular Disorders Association (VEDA) almost 100 million American adults have experienced dizziness or balance problems. Over 10 million people in the US alone have balance and vestibular issues lasting greater than 3 months. Additionally, there are approximately 1 million suffering from non-specific chronic dizziness. Vestibular and balance dysfunction frequently lead to falls which are often costly and traumatic indicators of a dysfunction that could be successfully controlled with an evidence-based, patient-centered comprehensive vestibular rehabilitation treatment program. Due to the baby boomers entering the “geriatric” population, a large majority of clinicians have shifted their skill sets to properly care for aging adults using the latest assessment tools and current research leading to more effective treatments.

Autism and SPD: Navigation Strategies Across the Lifespan

Autism and SPD: Navigation Strategies Across the Lifespan

Rehabilitation therapists frequently come across “difficult” patients and clients that present differently in different situations. While interventions may be working in some areas, the patient seems to regress quickly in others. Often the therapist feels as if they are just not able to “connect” effectively with the patient. These patients may be struggling with undiagnosed Autism or Sensory Processing Disorder. Very little was known about Autism or Sensory Processing until the last 20 years, so as we gain new research and treatment options for the growing number of children being diagnosed, we can translate this knowledge to multiple patient populations, including many adults who are exhibiting symptoms but were not properly diagnosed.

Comprehensive Rehabilitation for Total Joint Replacements

Tens of millions of Americans are currently diagnosed with arthritis of the hip, knee, and shoulder, with a dramatic increase in these diagnoses projected in the next 15 years. Consequently, an increase in joint replacement surgeries is also projected. Therapists must also have a good working knowledge of non-surgical conservative interventions for this patient population. With the recent Medicare changes, knowing the correct approach and how properly document your work with patients.

Direct Access in Physical Therapy

Direct Access in Physical Therapy

Direct Access has been shown to be safe, more cost effective and to provide better outcomes than waiting for a referral. In all 50 states, plus the District of Columbia, patients are able to see a physical therapist without a referral, making physical therapy first, the ideal treatment medium. However, most therapists are unsure of what is appropriate and safe in the Direct Access setting and unaware of how to implement proper care. With the Physical Therapy First initiative taking off, drastically increased wait times to see primary care providers, and evidence indicating not only that a physician's referral is an unnecessary step, but also that patient care, satisfaction and length of care are improved. Direct Access is the next important opportunity for growth in the Physical Therapy community.

Geriatric Exercise Strategies for Orthopedic Rehabilitation

Geriatric Exercise Strategies for Orthopedic Rehabilitation

Our current geriatric population is growing at an alarming rate of nearly 3% annually. Current estimates project 52 million by 2020 and 66 million by 2030. This population is at the greatest risk for falls due to age-related physiological changes and chronic health problems. Incorporating functional activities and therapeutic exercise into your patient’s treatment plans is more important than ever. Recent reports reveal that 75% of the geriatric population is sedentary - despite evidence indicating the significant impact of exercise for treatment of balance disorders, biological changes, common aging conditions, pain management, as well as its substantial effect on injury prevention.

Therapeutic exercise is a fundamental building block in any rehabilitative plan of care. Knowing how to maximize this powerful tool using current evidence in the fields of rehabilitation, neuroscience, and exercise physiology is essential. In today’s managed care environment authorized visits are at a premium, making efficiency in each session imperative. Increasing functional and pain-free movement for the aging adult population is a growing need, and providing solutions for this population can be challenging. Carryover and compliance with home programs play an integral role in the rehabilitation process, therefore a strong understanding of how to create exercise plans that can be easily progressed and regressed for your patients varying ability levels is a must.

Muscle Energy Techniques of the Spine & Extremities

Muscle Energy Techniques of the Spine & Extremities

“No Pain, No Gain”. Rehab professionals, athletes, coaches and patients have all heard this phrase a time or two. The idea that experiencing pain made an individual stronger has been pervasive. Recent studies have shown, however, that pain is perceived as a threat by the brain, which in turn alters the body’s natural movement pattern to compensate. Fortunately, research has given us much more insight into the brain’s responses to pain and how to utilize techniques to decrease the threat response and improve function.

Reflex Integration & Sensorimotor Challenges

Reflex Integration & Sensorimotor Challenges

Research studies have shown that sensory dysfunction symptoms are prevalent in up to 95% of those diagnosed with autism. These symptoms include difficulties coordinating sensory input into planning and executing movement effectively. Children with motor coordination difficulties are less competent at recognizing emotions in others and are more likely to have increased anxiety in common settings due to reduced social interaction. Evidence also suggests that these difficulties are present from birth and increase the risk of developing autism by age 3. This indicates that there is an impairment in the process of sensorimotor integration that plays a fundamental role in the development of autism.
